About Us

the new collective is a not-for-profit, volunteer led organisation providing support to emerging artists and providing experience to emerging arts professionals.

Formed in early 2012 by Beckie Upton, with the aim of providing support & guidance to young creatives in Bristol, “I created my own opportunity to break the ‘you have to have experience to get experience’ cycle; a project to benefit everyone involved.” - Beckie Upton. With initial funding of £300 from O2 Think Big, the new collective was able to successfully hold their first project, Frankly Emerging. Held at the Pervasive Media Studio on Bristol's dockside, three invited artists led a talk & discussion group to an audience of young & emerging artists. From this, the new collective were granted their second phase of funding, and are embarking on their second project to be held this summer at Philadelphia Street, an exciting hireable project space in the hear of Cabot Circus.

In May 2013, the new collective accepted proposals from newly emerging artists from Bristol & surrounding areas. The residency was offered to 8 Bristol based artists and they fulfilled a 6 week residency at Philadelphia Street, Cabot Circus. Each artist was required to host a workshop, event or talk during the 2 months occupied at Philadelphia Street, all completely free to the public and suitable for families and adults of all ages. We hope to educate and enliven interest in the arts, which can often be inaccessible to people outside of the arts sector. We welcome anyone to join us at our events and workshops, whether you would like to reacquaint yourself with a past skill or try something completely new.

the new collective: looking to the future

Now that our second and biggest project to date has come to an end, we'd like to say a huge thank you to all of our supporters. A massive thank you to everyone who has been involved in making the project a success and to all of our lovely artists. We hope to have continued success in the future and are now looking for ways to evolve the new collective into a long term, sustainable project. We will continue to update our Facebook and website with content that is interesting to art lovers, artists, art students & graduates while we take time to develop new plans. Watch this space!
